The Trans-Allegheny

Lunatic Aslyum

Weston, West Virginia

I recently visited an abandoned insane aslyum on a whim. I was looking for something cool to do while visiting West Virginia, and this happen to pop up on my Apple Maps. What I thought was a small muesuem about an insane aslyum, quickly turned into a whole adventure through 4 floors of mystery. I chose to do the two hour paranormal tour, this only set me back $37.50 and it was definetely worth the money.
room full of chairs The tour began on the bottom floor where they offer history about the muesuem along with some orginal pieces that were left behind after the aslyum was forced to closed down in 1994 due to over crowding and change in patient treatment.
labatomy dummy After a small history lesson along with some background information, we were then led to the recovery ward, where many people recovered or passed away from the countless labotomys done there.
Window with clock tower view After that we visited the ward for the criminially insane. This ward gave me the most chills because the most volent offenders including Charles Manson lived and died here.
Childern's Ward The women's and childern's ward followed that. I thought these wards would be more enlightening however they seemed to be most active with strange happenings. In this clip you can hear what i thought was a ball bouncing in this room, however there definitely no ball to be found.
Clock Skylight The last floor we visited contained various rooms that patients families could rent out if they wanted to stay over night and visit with them. It featured many skylights that light up the dim hallways with creaky floors. Most of the ceiling in the rooms were painted sky blue to resemble the sky.
Bed Post Room, Not orginial Bed As a bonus our tour guide led us the the "Bed Post Room", in this room one of the patients was brutually murdered by two other patients. He was hung numerous times followed by his head smashed repeatedly through the steel bed post untill he succumbed to his injuries.

The Trans-allegheny Asylum was by far worth the experience and the history. The treatment some of the patients received would be thought as unusual and cruel. If i were to visit again i would definetely recommend doing the 4 floor tour because it involves alot more history plus you also get to go on the same route as the paranormal tour. The asylum also offers a night tour where you can spend the night in the facility from 9pm to 5am and get the full experience. I would definitely be too chicken to attempt this level of fear inducing anxiety. The reason they run these tours is to raise enough money to restore the building to its former glory. When it cloed down in 1994 due to the over crowding, it was set to be demolished completely before it was bought by its new owners. They fought to preserve this piece of history and are doing a great job so far.
